T.AR.C. is an annual nation-wide rocketry based aerospace design and flying competition for 7-12 grade student teams. It is sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) and by the National Association of Rocketry (NAR).
The purpose of the Challenge is to teach students aerospace science and systems engineering by having them design and build a model rocket that lofts a fragile payload –a raw egg - to an exact altitude and flight duration and returns the egg to earth safely and unbroken."
T.A.R.C. is working very well at raising young people's interest in aerospace science and engineering as a career. In a student survey of their T.A.R.C. experience:
- 83 percent said it increased their interest in science and math.
- 85 percent said TARC helped them understand the value of teamwork.
- 67 percent said they intended to pursue a technical major when they attended college.
